Fresh Start

As commenters have wisely pointed out, this process is all about self-discovery and realization. Honestly discussing all this with Y, I woke this morning feeling very clear that:
  1. I want to stay in Chicago for the summer
  2. I want to return to Seattle after graduating
  3. I am still very interested in the VC/energy start-up plan

One of the big reasons for returning to my traditional IM recruiting plan was the idea that on campus recruiting would be easier than off campus. I have come to realize from my own experience and that of my classmates that this is by no means the universal case. I want to feel excited about my work and, honestly, neither equity nor fixed income research is all that exciting or meaningul. I am also realizing that San Francisco is not going to be a good PNW substitute for us. We're ready to go home. Ha. I imagine this plan will evolve as well ... but that's the thought this morning.

Back to homework!

aye yi yi, I don't even want to expain the eight hours of dismay I had when I realized I wouldn't be going back to Sea-town this summer. I need my Ray's Boathouse fix, stat. :)

Great to see you quickly abandon your brief dalliance with negativity and back to shooting for your dreams. I agree. Why would you move 2000 miles from home and spend $150K to end up with a job you don't truly love.

I think energy will be a tremendous growth area for decades to come. India and China are growing rapidly and people there have the money to aspire to a first world quality of life. We'll need a lot more energy than we need now.

I just want to thank you for having this blog.

I only stumbled onto it last night, but being able to go back and see your thoughts for over a year now is really interesting to me.

I am only a year out of college, and have a very enjoyable job... but I think an MBA is something I may consider for my future.

Since this wouldn't be something I seriously consider pursuing until a few years from now, I was thinking it might be helpful for me to organize my thoughts along the way via writing. I searched the web to see if a similar blog existed, and this is how I found your site.

I guess I just wanted to encourage you, by telling you that you are encouraging me.

Thank you for your insight and honesty.

See you at the top ;-)

I have absolutely enjoyed your blog and your frank opinions on the B-School journey. I have been accepted into the GSB Class of 2010and have a few questions around GSB.
Would you mind talking on the phone for 5-10 minutes?
If so, can you send me an email at

Thanks a lot for your time

Thanks so much for writing this blog. I have a 15 month old, but have been trying to decide if this is the right time to go to b-school. I started the application process this fall, but keep delaying because I spend so much time away from my baby. Reading your posts has really re-invigorated me to complete the process.
